Portlight Strategies Helps Disabled People Displaced by Natural Disasters
Hurricane Harvey delivered substantial destruction to the State of Texas and displaced tens of thousands from their homes. As disabled people, it is important to evacuate and seek shelter in a safe place. With the threat of Harvey downplayed and Houstonians told to shelter in place, many were blindsided by deadly floodwaters. People with disabilities were among those who found themselves in harm’s way.
If you’d like to help the recovery effort through a charitable contribution, we suggest directing your gifts to Portlight Strategies. Portlight is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to helping people with disabilities, including in the aftermath of disasters like hurricanes.
Portlight took an active role in the recovery effort after Hurricane Sandy brought immense devastation to the Atlantic Coast in 2012. After Sandy, the charity helped people with disabilities restore their lives. One of the most important services they provided was financial support in replacing medical equipment lost in or destroyed by the storm. They also directed resources towards the construction of access ramps and other accessibility features.
Even more important is the organization’s role in fostering an inclusive atmosphere for disaster preparedness. Governments are encouraged to include the needs of people with disabilities in their disaster-planning and evacuation efforts, so that no one is left behind or forgotten.
