Richard Quest Talks Accessible Travel on CNN Business Traveller
On a recent episode of CNN Business Traveller, host Richard Quest aimed to tackle the issues surrounding accessible travel. As much as I love and respect his program, his foray into travel for people with reduced mobility only scratched the surface.
In an episode titled, “Making travel accessible for all,” he only concerned himself with the market for senior and old age travel. The segment of just over 8 minutes, which aired worldwide on CNN and CNN International, should have been more appropriately titled as “Travel for old people.”
Although Quest carried a cane and put on makeup to “travel forward in time” and appear 30 years older, he didn’t come to understand the challenges so many of us face with respect to air travel, hotels and ground transportation.
As a person with a disability who was homebound and bedridden for so long, I was one of CNN’s most loyal watchers. I suspect there are many people going through the same experience I once had – being stuck, sedentary and with little hope for escape.
CNN, let’s show people what’s possible. Let’s run programming that accurately reflects the opportunities and challenges that come with accessible travel. Let’s educate society, businesses and the government on what needs to be done. And let’s share the vision for a more accessible world that can create hope for many. That is a segment I would applaud.
Take some time and watch the segment, then tell me what you think in the comments below. Did it live up to the title, “Making travel accessible for all,” or did it fall short?
